How to build muscle at home

After our last video Teenage workout advice - lot's of you have been asking "how do you build muscle at home?

Well a few things will differ from the gym, the main difference being the access to extra weight which will help create the stimulus for you to build muscle.

So when you are at home you have to constantly pus yourself in other ways things to consider are

Volume - Total amount of work or reps done in a specific time period,

Frequency - how often you workout.

Progressive overload - progressively making it harder for your self

Lever lengths - A way to put your body at a bio mechanical disadvantage so exercises are a LOT harder.

Does Powerlifting Build Muscle Size?

Powerlifting does it build size or only strength?

Like my Facebook Page: Coached By Lee: the other day I got an e-mail from one of my facebook followers asking if he would Lose Muscle if he switched from doing bodybuilding workouts to powerlifting workouts.

I thought that this was a very good question, hence the reason for the video :-)

When it comes to the iron game there are 3 basic disciplines of weight training - Bodybuilding - Powerlifting - and Olympic Weight Lifting.

Bodybuilding is primarily meant for building muscle size (i.e. hypertrophy).

Powerlifting is meant for gaining strength and power in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.

Olympic Lifting is meant for gaining explosive strength in the snatch and clean & jerk.

And while each of these sports have their specific purpose. There is carry over between all 3 variations of weight training. Generally speaking a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle and vice versa.

When a bodybuilder gains muscle size, he is also gaining strength and power go go along with that size. For example, most heavyweight bodybuilders have the physical strength to bench press over 400 pounds and squat over 500 pounds. Now while this is certainly not world record strength, it's still very strong compared to the average gym member, and herculean strength compared to the average Joe on the street.

Most powerlifters are pound for pound stronger than bodybuilders, but they aren't just all strength with no size. If you look at any elite level powerlifter you'll notice that they have a thick muscular build especially in their chest, back, and legs.

The same also goes for Olympic Lifters. In fact, some of the best leg and back development that I've ever seen on any physique has been on top level Olympic Weight Lifters.

You can combine both Bodybuilding & Powerlifting styles of training into your routine. In fact, some of the worlds top bodybuilders built their foundation through powerlifting.

The most famous bodybuilder of all time Arnold Schwarzenegger was a powerlifter. Former Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman was a powerlifter before he became a bodybuilder. Branch Warren, Johnny Jackson, Stan Efferding, Mike O'hearn, are all very muscular guys who have successfully competed in both bodybuilding and powerlifting.

So if you are looking to change up your workouts by incorporating powerlifting, you need not worry about losing muscle size from doing so, in fact you may actually spur on some new muscle growth from the unique training stimulus and the strength you gain from powerlifting can be carried over into your bodybuilding style workouts as well.

What To Eat To Gain Muscle, Burn Fat and Build Lean Muscle Mass [Full HD]

Here The Link: all know that the better we organize our eating habits to gain muscle and burn fat, the more amazing the results we achieve will be, both in the short and the long run. These include eating the right foods, in the right amount, and at the correct time. But... is it possible to add muscle mass without following a strict diet or counting each ounce of food you eat?

Our modern lifestyles sometimes make it very difficult to stick to a diet. Due to our work schedules and other daily activities, many of us find it very hard to follow strict diets, and some may even convince themselves that building muscle is not for them.

But here I come, to bring you this video with the best, highly practical and simple tips that will make your muscles grow once and for all in a way that is in sync with your busy lifestyle.

3 Goals to Go After

Your diet must meet these 3 objectives:

1) Provide your body with the nutrients it needs in order to recover and grow.

This may seem obvious, but it is VERY IMPORTANT. If your body can´t find enough proteins, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to sustain itself, it can hardly be expected to build massive muscles.

2) Boost your natural anabolic hormone levels. Testosterone is THE main anabolic hormone, but growth hormones also help forge muscle. If your anabolic hormone level is low throughout the day, you will build very little muscle. This is why the food you eat must raise the levels of these hormones.

3) Decrease catabolic hormone levels

Cortisol is the queen of catabolic hormones. These hormones are responsible for turning muscle into energy (decreasing them while at it) and accumulating body fat. Your diet must avoid reaching high levels of these hormones, because otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.

Now, 9 simple tips to put these 3 objectives into practice:

1- Add the following foods to your diet in order to gain muscle and burn fat: fish, whole eggs, egg whites, oats, potatoes (not fried), yogurt, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, broccoli, olive oil and green tea.

2- Breakfast abundantly, as it is one of the 2 most important meals of the day. Make sure to include a good amount of proteins, as well as fat (animal and vegetable) and complex carbohydrates.

3- Your second most important meal of the day is the one you have 15-30 minutes after working out. At this moment, your body is in a critical state known for its high catabolic hormone level; which means you must consume simple carbohydrates (I strongly recommend honey) along with proteins (such as whey protein, one of the only supplements that actually work, or boiled egg whites).

4- Make sure that you consume both vegetable and animal fats throughout the day. Doing this increases testosterone levels noticeably, helps build muscle, and reduces body fat.

5- Some foods with healthy vegetable fat you should eat are walnuts, peanuts, olive oil, and avocados.

6- Have foods with healthy animal fats: whole eggs, chicken breast, fish, and lean red meat.

7- Eat every 3 hours, having 6 meals a days is the best-case scenario.

8- If you are not able to cook very elaborate meals, such as if you must lunch at work, prepare a shake and carry it in a bottle. Include fresh fruit, oats, dried fruits and yogurt. Another great snack to take along with you are egg, tuna or chicken breast sandwiches on whole wheat bread.

9- Introduce these changes to your diet gradually: don't try to change it all from one day to next. To achieve a super effective, muscle-building diet, make small changes every day until you successfully incorporate better eating habits.

Many people when they have a goal of building muscle don't really come at it from the right angle. They try to hit the gym as hard as they can week after week and are surprised when their hard work doesn't pay off. The problem with this approach is that nutrition is many times completely ignored or viewed as something that isn't as important as exercise for building muscle. Or viewed like its just going to fall into place.

The reality is that nutrition is just as important if not more important than exercise. Your body does not want to add on a ton of muscle mass. In fact it's naturally resistant to adding muscle mass and that goes for everybody not just skinny hardgainers. The reason is because muscle costs a lot of calories to upkeep. And your body for survival reasons wants to avoid increases in its demands for energy just like you want to avoid increases in taxes or car payments. The only way that we are able to create a suitable for muscle growth is to show the body, he body its okay, I got your back, you're going to be getting all of these extra high quality energy sources through my diet, so don't worry about using a little extra energy to put on some muscle mass.

Just like when you get a raise at work your able to buy more things, when you give your body a raise in nutrients it's able to buy more muscle mass. I think I made it clear that we want a calories surplus when trying to build muscle, but that doesn't mean we can pig out on ice cream all day and get yolked. So I'm going to give you my top 5 favorite muscle building foods that I pack into my diet whenever I'm trying to gain muscle.

1. Eggs. For generations eggs have been considered one of the greatest protein sources for building muscle. The reason goes deeper than the fact that you get 6 grams of protein per egg. Eggs rank high on the bio-availability index. Bio-availability is basically the percentage of just how much our bodies can make use of certain protein sources. Our bodies absorb certain protein sources better than others and eggs rank higher than almost any other source of protein. When trying to put muscle mass on you can feel safe eating whole eggs rather than just the egg white. The cholesterol in food has been shown to not necessarily raise our blood cholesterol levels.

2. Brown Rice. Ever since I started eating brown rice I I realized that something about it made it an absolute necessity in a bodybuilders diet. Not only does it give you amazing whole grain carbs that'll provide energy for heavier lifts which in turn leads to greater muscle mass, but it has the highest bioavailability of protein than any other plant based source. It has almost double the bioavailability of beans and even beats soy. Rice alone does not have a complete amino acid profile so make sure you add some beans or chicken to make this a complete protein source.

3. Salmon. Salmon is high in fat, omega 3 fatty acids, creatine, and is packed with high quality protein. It's a great meal to eat for dinner or before bed because it'll help you stay anabolic, which means in a muscle building mode while you sleep.

4. Oats. Oats have a very high amount of protein for the amount of carbohydrate that they have when compared to other grains. They're also easy to make if you get instant oats, or if you through them into a blender with some protein powder. Oats are another great source of carbs that will give your body great energy for your lifts.

5. Nuts. To put on muscle you need to eat food that is dense in calories. And nuts helps you do just this while still getting an excellent source of protein. I wouldn't overdo it with the peanuts as there are a lot better options. Go with Cashews, Almonds, or best of all walnuts.

Keep in mind that just by eating all 5 of these foods you're not going to be guaranteed to gain muscle. You have to maintain a calorie surplus not just eat certain foods. If you eat a surplus of these foods, however you should see improvements in your muscle size.

Fat loss exercise tips for women over 40

Although Boomer Fitness is located in Vancouver, Washington, I like to learn about what others in the field are doing. On several fitness workshops that I have gone to I have run into Shawna Kaminski, who owns a gym in Calgary and is one of that city’s top fitness trainers. One of the things I respect most about her is that she lives what she preaches.

Recently, I got a chance to interview Shawna and get her take on how females can best go about staying fit over the age of 40. She was happy to share her top three recommendations for this, which include:

1. Giving up cardio as your number one weight loss tool. Most people don’t realize it, but cardio will raise your stress levels, as well as your cortisol. This is going to keep you from reaching your weight loss goals. If you can do more interval-based cardio, including springs, jump rope, mountain climbers, and yes, even burpies, you will have a more successful time trying to lose weight.

2. Start lifting weights. Now you may be thinking that you don’t want to do that because you will become big and bulky, but I want you to understand that is not going to happen. Becoming big and bulky is really hard work, it’s not what you will be doing. Look at Shawna in the video. She does weights 4-6 days a week for years. Does she look huge and bulky? Not a chance! Women just don’t have the hormones to be huge. You can add muscle and it will jump start your metabolism. Plus, you will love the new toned up look it gives you.

3. Watch your diet. Avoid the “see food” diet, where you eat whatever you happen to see. Instead, opt for keeping a food log, watching your portion sizes, and eating more nutrient-dense foods. Also, make sure you are getting enough calories so you are not walking around hungry.

There you have it, the three key principles that Shawna follows herself in order to stay lean, healthy, and fit. These are things that you can easily do over 40 that will keep you healthy, fit, and loving life. It’s important to see that what you have been doing all along hasn’t been working. Making some changes, like the ones listed above, is what will help take you where you want to be. If you don’t believe me, try one of our fitness challenges and see for yourself. 5 Huge Workout Cheats (WHY YOU CAN’T BUILD MUSCLE!)

Stop cheating yourself out of muscle gains you find that you either can’t build muscle or are just having a hard time adding muscle size, it could be the way you’re working out that is the problem. Far too often, guys will lean on the advice of lifting weight as heavy as possible to build new muscle without any regard for how that weight is lifted in the first place. What is worse is, if you let it, your body will move that weight using every compensation and workout cheat it can. When you rely on workout cheats too often, you greatly limit your ability to pack on muscle size and you’re begging for an injury at the same time.

In this video, I show you 5 of the most common upper body lifting cheats that rob you of muscle gains. These exercise cheats affect the size of your triceps, back, shoulders and even your chest to some degree. You will likely instantly recognize many of these workout mistakes since you either do them yourself or have seen someone else do them in your gym.

To correct these exercise mistakes you have to be sure to concentrate on your workout form all the time. As you fatigue during your workout this becomes harder and harder to do. That said, it becomes even more important to do so as you get tired, since ignoring this can quickly lead to an injury that can keep you out of the gym for a long time. If you are unable to go to the gym, your ability to build new muscle becomes that much more impossible!

Pay close attention to the slight variations in movement that occur during popular exercises like the pullup, shoulder lateral and front raises, one armed rows and triceps pushdowns. Each exercise is rife with cheats that prevent you from seeing the most muscle gains if you do them. You can fix these workout mistakes by making sure to perform the exercises with a careful eye on how you move the weight and not just where you’re moving the weights.
