Fitness over 40: How to Maximize & Understand Your Body w/Bryan Krahn & Jay Campbell
Fitness levels, recovery periods and the body’s response to exercise changes as we get older. How does a person over 40 get a workout that gives them results while still avoiding injury, overtraining and overtaxing your nervous system? On this episode, Jay Campbell talks with fitness coach and writer Bryan Krahn, who provides a guide for training in your 40s.
We started off the episode with the core topic of the day - fitness over 40. On the subject Bryan says it’s impossible to prescribe a blanket statement to an entire age group but there are key trends that have to be modified because you’re aging. There are people that respond much better and that’s because they come from an active background and follow a quasi-athlete lifestyle. For older people, when your training, nutritional and lifestyle factors are dialed in you actually look better because you’re neurologically more efficient. Also, if you’ve been training for 25 years consistently with an appreciable load, your muscles develop a hardness and density that doesn’t happen over a short period of time.
Bryan added a key benefit to training when you’re older, “you get good at this, you figure out how your body works and you allow yourself to get into a really good rhythm. When you’re young you jump from trend to trend but when you’re older you figure out what truly works for you.” To develop the kind of mastery that benefits your physique it’s important to get into habit and learn your body. “Everyone has a slightly different recovery pattern and mental things that keep them engaged and you learn what those things are.”
Jay then turned the discussion to the matter of programming. Bryan stated that he had to draw a line in the sand when it came to strength training even though there’s a huge push for it online. He said, “volume is what you have to curtail as you get older.” If you keep busting heavy loads and low rep sets it crushes you way faster than doing normal body building sets. It’s way less impactful, you bounce back faster and it builds a better physique and there’s less risk of injury.
Bryan aims to get his older clients out of the habit of loading more bars and more into the training experience, figuring out baseline volume and working their way up.
On the subject of isolation exercises for older people, Byran said, “isolation work is important because it allows you to have a much more focused and better mind to muscle connection, there’s a lower risk potential, you won’t injure yourself as much”. Jay and Bryan then focus in on overtraining, which Bryan calls “the boogie man of body building.” People over 40 typically are not overtraining and doing things like bench presses because their shoulders can’t handle that anymore. Strength training is something many glamorize but it can cause injury if you’re not built for it.
For most people who go to the gym recreationally, you’re not going to overtrain but you might overreach - especially if your lifestyle isn’t aligned to your workout regimen. Bryan reminded us to look out for the signs, which include things like negative self-talk and feeling like exercise is a chore. When this happens, it’s time to do a little less work and get some sleep. Jay closed the interview with a question about the cardio and resistance training balance when you’re older. He said he leans more on the strength training side but he uses cardio as a stress management tool, a good stress management tool.
Bryan’s tips for training over 40 are to start off with a realistic assessment of where you are, focusing on the quality of your work in the gym instead of performance. Lastly and most importantly make sure you avoid injury because it sets you back and recovery is harder when you’re older.

Fitness Over 40 - Lose Belly Fat - My Last 12 Lbs
If you are over 40 and struggling, this video is for you! Sometimes we have things out of our control that make it more challenging to lose fat. I was overloaded with bad bacteria and once I got rid of it and focussed on putting the good bacteria back into my body and maintaining what I did have, I started to lose the fat. Namely, belly fat. In this video, I explain how I did that.
Note: this was my experience and what worked for me. What worked for me, may not work for you. But, this might make you aware and lead you to a clue as to why you are struggling to losing fat.

How To Build Muscle? The Basics For Beginners
To burn fat you need a calorie deficit and hormonal balance. But to build muscle you need calorie surplus and hormonal balance.
Since building muscle is difficult to do without putting on some fat, the approach discussed here has you pair heavy weight training days with higher calorie days. This "lift more, eat more" approach helps get the body anabolic when it most needs it. By keeping calories more regulated on off training days you can also minimize fat gain in general.
This is a very simple, back to basics approach that will work best for beginners looking to grow muscle and not store fat and who are confused by all the fancy metabolic workouts out there that don't deliver results.
5 sets of 8-12 reps using big muscle groups is where we would start. Squat, Barball Rows, Bench Press & Shoulder Press 5 sets of 8-12 reps 3 times per week for a beginner is a great approach. Spend 8-12 weeks with this simple structure and you will have a much better time with your muscle building approach.
On those days try a diet similar to this:
Meal 1: 4-5 scrambled eggs, 1-2 cups oatmeal, Fruit, Milk
Meal 2: 20-30g whey protein plus banana & PB
Meal 3: Chicken breast, 1 cup rice, Broccoli (add fat to taste)
Meal 4: 20-30g whey protein plus banana (Post workout)
Meal 5: Steak, Baked Potato, Veggie. Add Fat for cals and taste
Meal 6: 20-30g whey protein plus banana and PB
If this simple approach does not work you may want to look at your calories a little more. A good rule of thumb is to multiply your body weight X 15 and this will be you maintenance level of calories. Make sure you have 500 cals or more over this number on training days as a very rough estimate. Getting In The Focus on A Great Pump For Overload
In order to increase muscle and strength your body must be forced to adapt to a physical stress above and beyond what it has previously experienced.
For example let's say you start off my lifting on flat bare-bell bench press 3 sets of 5 reps with 205 lbs. Now, if you continue to lift that same weight 205 lbs for the same 3 sets of 5 reps for the next 5 years you will not gain ANY new muscle or strength at all. Because there was no progressive overload. Your body has already adapted to this stressor and has built the muscle and strength you need to perform this exercise. So to get bigger and stronger you can either increase the weight you are lifting keep the weight the same and increase the reps per set. Either way you are exposing your body to a stress it has not experienced before. You do not have to constantly increase the weights you can increase reps per set or amount of sets per workout to apply the principle of progressive overload.

When you have motivation, you are driven and more determined to create the life that you want to live. You don’t suddenly believe that everything in life is easy but you know that you are prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal.
Maybe you are unhappy with the life you are living or, maybe you are just unhappy with one or two aspects of that life. Either way, change is required. As Einstein argued, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. Well, if you are unhappy with something, doing the same thing over and over again is not going to change something. The desire to change is one of the most important factors in goal setting but it is not enough to have that desire just once. Desire for change must be maintained throughout the process and that is what motivation really is.

Can You Build Muscle Without Weights? (Calisthenics people have the goal of gaining overall muscle size and strength, but would like to achieve their results using bodyweight exercises only.
There are many different muscle building calisthenics available, such as pushups, chin ups, dips, lunges and squats... but can you build muscle without weights to a significant degree? Is bodyweight training enough?
Ultimately, it really just depends on how much muscle you're trying to gain and what your goals are.
Bodybuilding without weights is certainly possible, and yes, you can gain muscle using a bodyweight workout. However, for most people with average genetics, it definitely has its limits and will only take you so far.
After you get past the "newbie gains" stage and are strong enough to perform your bodyweight exercises above 12-15 reps or more, you'll definitely need some added resistance in order to stimulate significant additional growth. Yes, you can gain muscle without weights, but only for a set period of time before you'll need to progress onto traditional lifts using barbells and dumbbells.
So, if...
A) You're brand new to training and just want to start off with something very basic.
B) You have serious limitations for equipment and can't join a gym.
C) You have an injury you're trying to work around.
D) Your goal is to just build a bit of muscle but nothing too serious.
... Then sure, using calisthenics only is fine, at least for the time being.
However, if your goal is to achieve the very best results possible and maximize your muscle size and strength gains, freeweights are definitely going to be necessary to include.
Do you need weights to gain muscle? No, however, you do DO need weights in order to gain muscle optimally, and there is no replacement for heavy freeweight compound lifts in helping you achieve that.

Welcome to Health and Fitness for over 40
My transformation started on a cold day in February 2010. I just started to walk. My walks got further and further. My wife said I need to do more. She had been doing an infomercial exercise program for quite a while and I just blew her off. "It was just another one of those exercise programs."
She challenged me to start the program and I took her up on the challenge. I started on my birthday May 26, 2010, and haven't looked back.
You see I was an athlete all of my life and competed at the highest level in college. With that being said, I had not done any exercising for over 30 years. I was in denial. When I looked in the mirror I still saw myself as that college athlete expect I was running out of clothes that fit.
I finally WOKE UP.
I did the program for a year moved on to the next level for a year and started phase three in May of 2012.
After a year of phase 3, I have been doing a COMBINATION OF both workouts.
In December 2013, I started phase 4. Then in November 2014 I started phase 5
I have also added a supplemental drink for my breakfast.
What a difference - lost 40 pounds and went from a waist size 48 to 40. I can now button my top button on my shirts and I feel great.
I am 60 years old but feel like I'm 27. My BP is 117/67, Cholesterol is 136, Blood Glucose is 96, LDL/HDL Ratio is 1.8 and resting heart rate of 60. Plus I take no medications.

Looking for a work out plan to build muscle mass? If you haven't made much muscle or strength gains in the last little while, take a step back and evaluate your workout plan objectively. Sometimes, the most basic and simple workout plans work the best to build muscle strength, and can help you get back on track to further gains and break plateaus. There are just a few very simple principles to follow:
*One muscle group per day
*Minimum one week rest in between workouts
*Your muscle building workout should be planned around heavy, compound exercises
*Lift heavy, or don't even bother

I always workout just one muscle group each workout session, and setup my workout week into a 5 day split - 5 days one, and 2 days off. It looks something like this:

I stumbled across this great piece of music and I found this wonderful reading of Bukoswki's 'Roll The Dice' so that this video just came to me.
When I started bodybuilding back in 2010, there was a video that inspired me more than anything... it was called 'Beauty Of Bodybuilding' by Zhasni (I guess) and it felt like an eye-opener. Anyway, while cutting this little piece of art, I was reminded of that video, because of it's pacing - and I hope someone out there might feel something like that for this video.
May it motivate you to push a little bit harder, to go a little step further. May it encourage you to stand up and turn your back to the crowd to follow your dreams. May it be a light in your darkest hour when all that surrounds you is loneliness, sorrow and despair. May this remind you, that we are many. It was my pleasure.

Hill sprints: Increase power, build muscle & burn fat
Hill sprints are great to increase explosive power, build muscle and get fit/burn fat. Hill sprints can also be used to improve conditioning/endurance etc. They can be structured different
by variations of work to rest ratios, intensity, duration, incline etc.
Hill sprints can be very extreme and tough training.
Experience in running/sprints/conditioning etc will be required to be ready for hill sprints. If in very bad condition or having any other health related problems, hill sprints are not where to start.

Check the surface before running (smooth without stones or holes in it) Always warm up properly with jogging, muscle activation/dynamic exercises...
Next step is a few warm up sprints (not full intensity). Then ready to go!

How This Fitness Model Gets Ripped... What The Frog?
Fast, Revolutionary Fat Loss: guys, I'm Clark Bartram and I'm here today with the lead trainer of Abs After 40, Mark Mcilyar.
I've also got Roger here with me, and we're going to show you the next big thing in fitness - The Frog.
We're going to do 4 core movements - the Leaper, the Superman, the Core Killer, and the Mojo.
Normally, more weight is more difficult - but with the frog, we put a lot more focus on the core - and so heavier is actually easier because we will use more core power rather than our limbs.
Here's the base movement: FHE - Full horizontal extension. Just placing the feet on the foot pads and hands on the bar with the wheels locked, I will push out horizontally.
From here, I'll do the Supermans. Activating my lower body and keeping it locked, I'm just going to do shoulder presses essentially.
After that, I'll do an overhead squat - so just the opposite. Keeping the arms locked over the head, we're bringing the knees all the way up.
For the Core Killer - You'll keep your arms and legs mostly straight but let your hips bend and you'll really feel how tough this is in your core to control this movement. Allow the pad to touch the back bar when going into the contraction of this movement.
Lastly - the Mojo is combining the first two, allowing your knees to bend toward your elbows and your elbows to come down near your knees, and then press everything back out straight.
Interestingly enough, the Pittsburgh Steelers and other NFL teams have been purchasing and using these for their power training - They actually have bought 12 so far! Although it's unconventional and unusual, the benefits of this unique style of training have been undeniable.
They've done this because as an athlete, they want to get better. And how do we get better? We have to identify our weaknesses and improve them, and that's exactly what happens when people first start trying the Frog.

Not only does exercise improve your body, it helps your mental function, says certified trainer David Atkinson.
"Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity," says Atkinson, director of program development for Cooper Ventures, a division of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas.
All that makes for a more productive day.
"It is clear that those who are active and who exercise are much more productive at work," says Todd A. Astorino, assistant professor of kinesiology at California State University-San Marcos.
Improved productivity not only makes you a better worker, it makes things better for everyone in the workplace. Companies with less wasted work hours and less sick time end up with lower health care costs -- and an improved bottom line, Astorino says.
2. Movement Melts Away Stress
As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you'll experience less stress in every part of your life.
"Exercise produces a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction," says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. He says it also helps elevate your mood and keep depression at bay.You're not the only person who will benefit from more happiness and less stress in your life. When you're less stressed, you're less irritable, Atkinson says -- and that could improve relationships with your partner, kids, and co-workers.
3. Exercise Gives You Energy
You might be surprised at how, say, popping in a workout tape for 30 minutes in the morning can change your whole day. When endorphins are released into your bloodstream during exercise, says Astorino, "you feel much more energized the rest of the day."
And when you improve your strength and stamina, it's easier to accomplish everyday tasks like carrying groceries and climbing stairs. This also helps you feel more energetic over the course of the day.A common excuse among Atkinson's clients is that they're too tired to exercise, he says. While exercise may make you feel more tired at first, he says, that won't last long.The physical tiredness you feel after working out isn't the same as everyday fatigue, he says. Besides, once your body adjusts to exercise, you'll have more energy than ever.
4. It's Not That Hard to Find Time for Fitness
The key, says Atkinson, is to use your time more wisely. Think about killing two birds with one stone.
Take your kids to the park or ride bikes together, and you're getting physical activity while enjoying family time, he says. Beyond that, go for a hike, take the kids swimming, or play hide-and-seek, tag, softball, or horseshoes in the backyard.
At work, he says, schedule a meeting on the jogging track or on the golf course.
Also, forget the idea that you have to trudge to the gym and spend an hour or more doing a formal workout. Instead, you can work short spurts of physical activity into your day.
"Everyone has 20 minutes," Atkinson says. "Everyone has 10 minutes to jump rope, and sometimes that's better than 20 minutes of walking or running."
Indeed, squeezing in two or three bouts of 15 or 20 minutes of activity is just as effective as doing it all at once, says Astorino. Vacuuming the house in the morning, riding bikes in the park with the kids in the afternoon, then taking a brisk walk in the evening can add up to an active day.Recent U.S. government guidelines say that to lose weight and keep it weight off, you should accumulate at least 60 minutes of exercise a day, says Astorino. But half an hour a day is all you need to reap the health and disease-fighting benefits of exercise.
5. Fitness Can Help Build Relationships
Think of what exercising with a partner can do for a relationship, whether it's with a spouse, a sibling, or a friend you used to go to lunch with once a week.Not only that, says Astorino, but exercise is always more fun when there's someone to do it with. So plan to walk with your spouse after dinner every night. Meet your sister or that friend for tennis or an aerobics class instead of lunch.
Besides, Astorino says, people who have exercise partners stay with their programs and reach their goals more often than those who try to go it alone.
"For long-term weight loss, you need to have social support," Astorino says.
