There are many different muscle building calisthenics available, such as pushups, chin ups, dips, lunges and squats... but can you build muscle without weights to a significant degree? Is bodyweight training enough?

Ultimately, it really just depends on how much muscle you're trying to gain and what your goals are.

Bodybuilding without weights is certainly possible, and yes, you can gain muscle using a bodyweight workout. However, for most people with average genetics, it definitely has its limits and will only take you so far.

After you get past the "newbie gains" stage and are strong enough to perform your bodyweight exercises above 12-15 reps or more, you'll definitely need some added resistance in order to stimulate significant additional growth. Yes, you can gain muscle without weights, but only for a set period of time before you'll need to progress onto traditional lifts using barbells and dumbbells.

So, if...

A) You're brand new to training and just want to start off with something very basic.

B) You have serious limitations for equipment and can't join a gym.

C) You have an injury you're trying to work around.

D) Your goal is to just build a bit of muscle but nothing too serious.

... Then sure, using calisthenics only is fine, at least for the time being.

However, if your goal is to achieve the very best results possible and maximize your muscle size and strength gains, freeweights are definitely going to be necessary to include.

Do you need weights to gain muscle? No, however, you do DO need weights in order to gain muscle optimally, and there is no replacement for heavy freeweight compound lifts in helping you achieve that.
